Active listening skills help people learn how to listen and ask questions to clarify their understanding of another person’s ideas, feelings and points of view. It is a mutual process that helps people express themselves more clearly, listen more attentively and avoid misunderstandings that lead to conflict.

Behind the Scenes of Extractives: Money, Power and Community Resistance Share This

This is a course of six popular education exercises on ‘Investment chains in extractives projects.’ It was commissioned by the Extractives Working Group (EWG) of the Count Me In! (CMI) Consortium, a group of feminist funder and civil society organisations dedicated to joint work in support of feminist activism and women’s rights.The course is based on the contents of the research report ‘Behind the scenes of extractive industry: critical insights from Honduras, Indonesia and Zimbabwe’ by Salena Fay Tramel and Arif Naqvi.
Creating A Safe Space

To create a safe space, collectively defined by participants in which they can bring their ‘full selves’, ensure mutual learning is possible and risk is mitigated.
Heart, Mind, Body Mapping

This activity uses body mapping to identify how fears, tension and stress are affecting our lives, how that relates to systems of oppression and how we can strategize for dealing with them.
Loaded Paper-Ball Throw

This is a fun way to review content from prior sessions or discussion in a participatory way. It is often used during a workshop of several days as a way to start the day or a new session which builds on prior discussions by collectively reviewing and re-energizing content.

This activity can be used in multiple ways as an initial exercise for introductions or as a game to start off an evening of informal conversation.
Storytelling Circle

This activity uses storytelling as a process of empowerment in which participants’ voices and experiences are affirmed and we build community and solidarity. It is also an introduction to listening and documenting skills.
The Dialogue Process: Codes and Questions - "But Why?"

Dialogue processes -- focused on critical thinking and problem-solving and grounded in values of equality, solidarity and the common good -- are crucial aspects of social justice and movement-building work. Facilitation of these consciousness-raising processes require a range of skills that include the ability to: form safe, inspiring climates of trust and solidarity, develop compelling and creative ways to generate discussion and analysis, and master the art of questioning to probe beyond the surface and encourage deeper awareness, connection, reflection and action.
